Satoshi Nakamoto is the ghost in crypto's founding myth — the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin who wrote the whitepaper, mined the first coins, said goodbye, and vanished so completely that the absence itself became the industry's most powerful meme.

Origin

The name first appeared on the Bitcoin whitepaper, published to a cryptography mailing list on October 31, 2008; the network's genesis block followed in January 2009, embedding a newspaper headline about bank bailouts — the founding shitpost of decentralized money.

Rise

Satoshi corresponded with early developers for about two years, then handed off the code and disappeared around 2011. The vacuum generated endless folklore: the untouched fortune of roughly a million early-mined bitcoins, watched like a doomsday seal; the misidentifications (a 2014 magazine cover famously accused an unrelated Dorian Nakamoto); and the claimants, most notoriously Craig Wright, whose assertion was comprehensively rejected by a UK court in 2024. “We are all Satoshi” became both meme and manifesto. Every unsigned genius post on crypto Twitter still gets the same reply: Satoshi?

Satoshi is the origin block of the roster's builder lineage — Vitalik is his most famous intellectual heir, Laser Eyes his most devoted congregation, and Maxi the keeper of his strictest church. CZ and SBF built empires on the market he set in motion.
