CZ — Changpeng Zhao — is the exchange boss as meme: the calm, polo-shirted founder of Binance whose single-character tweet “4” (shorthand for “ignore FUD”) and mantra “funds are SAFU” became core vocabulary of crypto culture.

Origin

A former McDonald's worker turned high-frequency-trading engineer, Zhao founded Binance in 2017 and grew it into the world's largest crypto exchange with astonishing speed, running it from everywhere and nowhere in trademark minimalist style.

Rise

CZ's meme canon is rich: “funds are SAFU” (canonized by a 2018 community video after a typo-born phrase), the numbered-tweet system where “4” means ignore the fear-mongering, and his standing role as final boss of crypto Twitter. In November 2022 his tweets announcing the sale of FTX's token triggered the run that felled SBF — history's most consequential subtweet. In 2023 he stepped down and pleaded guilty in a US settlement, serving a brief sentence in 2024; reports of a later US presidential pardon only extended the saga's meme half-life.
