Doge

Doge is the internet's beloved Shiba Inu — a sideways glance, a swarm of Comic Sans interjections, and the meme that accidentally founded an entire school of finance. Much history. Very consequence. Wow.

Origin

The photo behind Doge was taken in 2010 by Japanese teacher Atsuko Sato of her rescued Shiba Inu, Kabosu, and posted to her blog. The word “doge” itself floated around the web earlier, but photo and word fused on Tumblr and Reddit around 2013, when captioning Kabosu with broken-English inner monologue — “such wow”, “much brave” — became a global pastime.

Rise

In December 2013, programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer forked a joke cryptocurrency named Dogecoin, choosing the meme as its face. The joke outlived every punchline: the Dogecoin community sponsored a NASCAR car and helped fund the Jamaican bobsled team's Olympic trip in 2014, and in 2021 the coin ran to an all-time high on the back of Reddit mania and relentless boosting from Elon. Doge became the template for every dog-coin that followed. Kabosu herself passed away in 2024, mourned worldwide as the grandmother of meme finance.

Connections

Doge is the patriarch of the roster's canine dynasty: Shiba carries the family colors, while Bonk and WIF are the Solana-born grandchildren. Elon remains the meme's loudest patron.
