Origin

The left panel is Taylor Armstrong in a famously emotional scene from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, originally aired in 2011. The right panel is Smudge, the vegetable-refusing cat from a 2018 Tumblr post. In May 2019 a tweet welded them together, and the combined image outgrew both sources within weeks.

Rise

Through 2019 the format was inescapable — one of the year's defining memes, flexible enough for sports rivalries, programming-language wars, and historical grudges.
