Troll

Trollface is the grinning MS Paint mask of internet mischief — the crude, wrinkled smile that became the universal symbol for “problem?” and defined an entire era of online provocation.

Origin

Trollface was drawn in 2008 by Carlos Ramirez, a DeviantArt user posting as Whynne, for a rage comic about the pointlessness of trolling. The face escaped the comic instantly, becoming the default avatar of every gotcha, bait and prank on the late-2000s web.

Rise

Through the rage-comic boom of roughly 2008–2012, Trollface was inescapable — the smirk at the end of every bait-and-switch. Ramirez, unusually for a meme creator, registered the copyright and earned real licensing money from it: one of the first demonstrations that memes had market value. After the rage-comic era faded, the face returned in the 2020s through “trollge” horror edits and relentless remix cycles, proving the grin cannot be killed.
