Salt Bae

#celebrity#food#2010s
Character: Salt Bae · Origin year: 2017 · Tier: Cult

Salt Bae is the flick of the wrist that seasoned the entire internet — Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe's slow-motion salt sprinkle, elbow high, sunglasses on, forearm as delivery mechanism.

Origin

The move went viral in January 2017 via an Instagram video titled “Ottoman Steak”, in which Gökçe carves a steak and finishes it with the now-legendary cascading-salt gesture. Within days “Salt Bae” was a global nickname and the gesture a universal punchline.

Rise

The meme made Gökçe's steakhouse chain a celebrity-circuit staple, later famous — and memed all over again — for gold-leaf-covered steaks with prices that read like typos, and for cameos everywhere from sports finals to music videos. The gesture itself became detachable: anything applied with finesse, from parmesan to code reviews, is now salt-bae'd.

Connections

Salt Bae shares the roster's service-industry wing with Harold, the stock-photo professional, and seasons the winnings of Stonks and Whale — at market price plus considerable markup.
