Rick

Character: Rick · Origin year: 2007 · Tier: Classic

Rick is the roster's tribute to the most successful prank in internet history: the rickroll, in which a promising link delivers you instead to Rick Astley's 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up". The name summons other famous Ricks too, but on the internet there is only ever one destination.

Origin

The prank evolved on 4chan around 2007 from an earlier gag called duckrolling, in which baited links led to a picture of a duck on wheels. Someone swapped the duck for Astley's music video, and the format found its final form: a trap door with a synth-pop bottom.

Rise

By 2008 the rickroll was mainstream infrastructure. YouTube redirected every featured video on its homepage to the song for April Fools' Day, and Astley himself performed a live rickroll of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade that November. The meme turned a decades-old single into a permanent piece of internet plumbing — billions of views accumulated one betrayal at a time — and gave Astley an entire second career as a beloved elder statesman of the web. To this day, checking a suspicious link before clicking is partially his legacy.

Connections

The rickroll is trolling perfected into harmlessness — bait culture's wholesome endpoint, sharing craft with every gag in the MLG edit era. As a legacy celebrity icon he stands beside Keanu in the internet's hall of genuinely-loved humans, and his ambush spirit fits any lobby that ever screamed Leeroy Jenkins.

In BomberMeme

Rick's whole fighting style is the bait: you think you know where the bomb is, and you are wrong. The card is a rare with Void-arena affinity — a legacy icon that never gives you up and never lets you down a corridor safely. Mempedia's position: the rickroll was the internet's first universally honored smart contract.
