NPC is the grey one — the expressionless Wojak variant that accuses its target of having no inner monologue, only scripts. It became one of the sharpest and most controversial memes of the late 2010s.

Origin

The NPC Wojak — grey skin, pointed nose, dead eyes — crystallized on 4chan around September 2018, borrowing the video-game term “non-player character” to caricature people who repeat received opinions on cue.

Rise

Within weeks the meme jumped to Twitter, where a wave of parody NPC accounts was banned in the run-up to the 2018 US midterms — a moderation story covered by mainstream press, which of course made the meme bigger. “NPC” has since entered everyday speech as shorthand for autopilot behavior, and streaming culture later spawned literal NPC performance — looping catchphrases for tips — completing the loop from insult to profession.
