Origin

The cat's real name was Tardar Sauce. In September 2012 her owner's brother posted her photo to Reddit, and commenters refused to believe the frown wasn't photoshopped. Within days “Grumpy Cat” image macros — grumpy about everything, delighted by nothing — had colonized the internet.

Rise

Grumpy Cat became the first true meme celebrity of the 2010s: an agent, an endorsement empire, bestselling books, a Lifetime movie, appearances from SXSW to network television, and a famous wax figure. She won a headline-making trademark lawsuit in 2018, then passed away in May 2019, mourned by millions who had never frowned so hard at anything as she frowned at everything.
