Bad Luck Brian is the yearbook photo of a grinning teenager in braces and a plaid sweater-vest, cast by the internet as the universe's favorite target: whatever can go wrong, goes wrong for Brian, in the most ironic way available.

Origin

The photo is of Kyle Craven, whose deliberately goofy school yearbook picture — he reportedly hammed it up on purpose — was posted to Reddit in January 2012 by his friend Ian Davies with a caption about a driving-test failure. The advice-animal format erupted from there: top line sets up modest hope, bottom line delivers the cruelly specific twist.

Rise

For years Bad Luck Brian was one of the most productive caption templates alive, a machine for two-line tragicomedy. Craven leaned into the fame good-naturedly, making appearances and licensing the image — including, fittingly for this encyclopedia, selling the original photo as an NFT during the 2021 boom. The meme survives because the emotional physics are universal: everyone has been Brian at least once.
