Anon is the internet's oldest mask: the anonymous poster, the default identity of imageboard culture, and the uncredited author of a staggering share of everything in this encyclopedia.

Origin

When 4chan launched in 2003, posts defaulted to the name Anonymous — and the culture that grew there turned the absence of identity into an identity. Anon is singular and plural, a person and a crowd. Greentext stories begin with an anon; memes emerge from anons; nobody signs anything, and somehow the style is unmistakable.

Spread

Anonymity shaped meme culture's deepest norms: ideas compete without authors, credit evaporates, and the funniest version wins regardless of who typed it. The same mask later walked into world headlines through hacktivist movements, but in meme history Anon's role is quieter and larger — the unnamed workshop where formats like rage comics, greentext, and half the classical canon were forged.

Connections

Anon is the presumed author of Wojak and the congregation of the frog-cult of KEK. Its opposite number is the Normie — the outsider with a name, a face, and no idea where the memes come from. Its arena colleague Voxel appreciates a fellow entity with no face.
